Chapter 30

LEIGHTON finished exfoliating and moisturizing his entire body with some ultra-exfoliating cream and mango moisturizing body cream. Hugo had gone to bed at eight with a late winter cold he said he’d picked up from their hike through the Solstice Canyon Trail on the weekend. Leighton thought, No, dear, it was you taking your penis out to have sex behind the cedar tree on the Deer Valley Loop Trail. Lucky you didn’t get a snake bite instead.

As the dutiful partner, Leighton had rubbed Hugo’s chest with Vicks, left a glass of water on the bedside table, and kissed, on the forehead, the love of his life. By now, Leighton thought, the darling is snoring like an English bulldog, so he went to the kitchen and was finishing warming up a glass of milk and about to pop in a Valerian pill when the cell phone in his housecoat pocket began to vibrate. Leighton absent mindedly pulled it out, glanced at the screen, and then looked again.

“That bitch!” he cursed and immediately started to dial a number.

Helena was woken by the telephone. She wondered why Carole wasn’t answering it and then remembered Carole often wore headphones and listened to music when she worked. Helena ran into the living room. Carole was asleep on the sofa, the weather channel flashing images of rough seas and toppled trees. Helena snatched up the receiver.

“Hello, Helena here. How are you, dear? Yes, she is but she’s asleep, I’m afraid. Can I help, dear? Yes. San Simeon. In this storm? Are you sure there’s no other way? Yes, dear. I understand. We’ll bring her. Yes, all of us. It’s best. Okay. Uh-huh. Yes, dear. I’ll rally the troops. Don’t worry I was up. He’ll be fine. Yes. Yes. Oh dear. Yes. I agree. I’ll get everyone out the door in ten minutes. Yes. I do. Okay. We’ll meet you at the on ramp. You have Tom’s cell number? Good. Thank you, dear.”

Helena hung up the phone and leaned down. “Wake up, Carole!” Helena shook her daughter. “Wake up! We have to go.”

Carole opened one eye and looked up at her mother. Lightning flashed outside the bay window. “What? Now?”

“Now!” her mother snapped. Helena had only lost her temper with Carole once in her life—the time Carole announced she was going to study in London. “And we are expected to pay?” Helena had shouted. It had taken them ten years to recoup the money. At least she got a husband out of it, thought Helena. “Get up!”

Carole pulled herself off the comfortable, warm sofa with a groan. “What is it, Mom? You’re scaring me.”

“Get the boys up, quickly. Leave them in their pajamas but grab their clothes for tomorrow! Let me get your dad in the car and then I’ll explain. Everything is okay but we have to go. Now!”

Helena ran back to her bedroom. Lightning lit up the room and the face of her dear Tom. Helena counted, “One, two, three, four,
